The case for this work

Context

Young jobseekers can complete training without gaining the work history, references, confidence, and employer relationships needed to enter the labour market. Informal placements may also expose participants to unsafe work or unclear expectations when supervision standards are absent.

Our response

AYCP prepares participants for work, screens host enterprises, agrees learning plans, and monitors time-bound placements. Coaching covers communication, reliability, customer service, workplace safety, and the next step after the placement.

Host enterprises were screened, learning plans agreed, and the first participant group placed.

Placement delivery

Participants completed supervised work periods with midpoint and completion reviews.

Expansion and follow-up

A second placement group begins while AYCP tracks employment and training outcomes from the first.

Inclusion and safeguarding

Participation by design

  • Host matching considers disability access, participant safety, care responsibilities, location, and transport requirements.
  • Young women are supported to enter a broad range of trades rather than being channelled only into traditionally gendered roles.

Risk management

Risks addressed in delivery

A host uses a placement as unpaid substitute labour
Set learning outcomes, limit placement duration, monitor attendance and tasks, and remove participants where standards are breached.
Transport costs reduce attendance
Prioritise local matching and include targeted transport support in participant plans.

Sustainability

What continues beyond delivery

  • Retain compliant hosts in a managed placement network with standard agreements and learning plans.
  • Give every completer a skills record and reference that remains useful beyond the intervention.
